Phu Phan Kham camping in Thailand near Ubonrat dam is a very useful camping spot if you are on the way from around Nonggkhai and want to break the journey into maneagable driving days, and also useful if you are planning to cross to Laos from Thailand the next day.
It is situated near the Ubonrat Dam on a side road between Udon Thani and Khon Kaen. Coming from the north the easiest way to get there is to head to Nong Bua Lamphu, and then turn south towards Nong Sang. When you hit the Ubonrat Dam reservoir, look for a fairly unexpected turn of to the right, and head down towards the lake. There are a number of camping areas along the lake, with nice views, and once you enter tha park about 3-5 kms further the shore flattens out and you have a large slightly isolated area where you can pitch a tent, with a chance of being undisturbed by other campers. There is a lovely sunset view over the lake, and fairly basic, but very acceptable toilet and shower facilities. This may be flooded at certain times of the year depending on the water level, but if it is flooded, you can always camp on higher ground near the park headquarters.
